KSC & PSU collaboration with New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra
February 18, 24 & 25, 2024 Silver Center for the Arts, Plymouth State University, Plymouth, NH and Seifert Theatre, Salem High School, Salem, NH.
KSC and PSU choirs prepared Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2” for a performance series with the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra. The project involved coordinated planning between three conductors, independent, and combined rehearsals, and three performances. A KSC faculty member presented a historical lecture on Mahler and his compositions. Voice faculty from KSC and PSU were the featured solo vocalists. (Concert program with photo attached.)

KSC Cantate! High School Choral Festival

Keene State College’s Music Department hosts an annual Cantate! High School Choral Festival inviting choirs from New England for an educational choral festival. This is a free event meant to provide support to developing high school choral programs and their directors. There is a large group pedagogical warm up led by a KSC voice faculty member, a performance by each high school choir followed by a clinic lead by a KSC faculty member. The culmination of the festival is an ‘all-sing’. In 2023, we performed “Put a Little Love in Your Heart (with Love Train) arranged by Greg Gilpin. (Audio recording attached.)

KSC Concert Choir international choral exchange in Einbeck, Germany
May 13, 2023. Münsterkirche St. Alexandri, Einbeck, Germany.
The KSC Concert Choir participated in a 7-day choral-cultural exchange in Keene’s partner city of Einbeck, Germany. Throughout the week, we rehearsed and collaborated with Einbeck’s VOICES and Kantorei to develop a shared public performance. One of our composition students arranged chamber orchestra instrumentation to accompany one of our combined pieces, “Anthem of Peace” by Mark Wilberg. All choirs also combined on “Abendlied” by Josef Rheinberger and “May the Road Rise to Meet You” arranged by James E. Moore. (Concert program with photo attached.)

KSC Choirs international choral exchange with St. Nicolai Choir, Einbeck Germany and Grand Monadnock Youth Choirs, Peterborough, NH.
March 26, 2023. Redfern Arts Center Alumni Recital Hall, Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire. The international choral exchange featured independent performances by each participating choir and the performance culminated in an all-sing of “For the Beauty of the Earth” by John Rutter.

KSC Concert Choir collaboration with Zenith Ensemble

Keene State College’s Concert Choir participated in the Redfern Arts Center Presenting Series during the Zenith Ensemble (https://thezenithensemble.com/) professional choir guest residency. KSC singers participated in voice masterclasses and prepared three pieces to be performed with the Zenith Ensemble singers in a public performance. We had rich discussions and performed two social justice pieces - “Resilience” by Abbie Betinis and “We Walk in Love” by Deanna Witkowski. The KSC Concert Choir and Zenith Ensemble also performed “I Will Lift Mine Eyes” by contemporary composer Jake Runested. Students benefited by working with another conductor and singing alongside professional singers. They also benefited by listening to the Zenith Ensemble perform David Lang’s contemporary setting of “The Little Match Girl Passion”. (Audio recording attached.)

Jonathan Blumhofer of The Arts Fuse reviewed composer Heather Gilligan’s 2017 album of vocal chamber music. This album contains six song cycles across 20 tracks: Living in Light (tracks 1-4) for soprano and cello; Garden Songs (tracks 5-7) for soprano, trumpet, and piano;
Mixed Metaphors (tracks 8-10) for soprano and piano; Winged Reflections (tracks 11-13) for soprano, saxophone, and piano; Battlegrounds (tracks 14-17) for soprano and string quarts; and Finer Points (tracks 18-20) for soprano and percussion. ”

This SATB choral work, Rise Up, My Love, was commissioned by Matthew Leese and the Zenith Ensemble in 2023 and premiered at St. Bernard Church, Keene, NH in June 2023. Composed by Heather Gilligan, it uses texts from Song of Songs, Cant. 2 and Cant. 8.

This choral work was commissioned by Boston’s ArtSong Project in 2011 and premiered by Lorelei Ensemble; Beth Willer, conductor. The venue is the Shalin Liu performance center in Rockport, MA. The program consisted of 6 composers, each setting the same text of “Dona Nobis Pacem” for treble choir.

This is the first of four songs for soprano and cello, commissioned and recorded by soprano Margot Rood in 2014. The song cycle is called Living in Light, with texts by Sara Teasdale. The songs comprise the first four tracks of Gilligan’s 2017 album of vocal chamber music. It was recorded at the Redfern Arts Center, Keene, NH, Margot Rood, soprano; Patrick Owen, cello.
