Music that would have been sung in New England from the late 1600s (material from the Bay Psalm Book, the first book published in the United States), including work by New England poets, through to the twenty-first century. With songs from the New England Singing schools (Billings, Lowell, Swan, Holyoke, and more), a female Shaker music composer, Edward MacDowell, and Amy Beach; music of Nathaniel Dett and Ulysses Kay, arrangements of carols by Alice Parker, arrangements by Robert DeCormier, and the Christmas Cantata by Daniel Pinkham. Music of Ethyl Smyth, Margaret Bonds, Leonard Bernstein, William Albright, and Francisco J. Núñez. The repertoire includes settings of the poetry of Langston Hughes and Eric Gamalinda. Holyoke poet Anika Nailah will present her own spoken poetry and be our narrator for Bernstein’s “The Lark.” Pianist Nancy Babb will perform settings of spirituals by Bonds. iCal 8:00 PM. Da Camera Singers [MA]: Then and Now. Medieval and Early Renaissance pieces with three newly minted commissions. The “Then” portion include Clement Janequin: Le Chant Des Oiseaux. The “Now” portion highlights works in Da Camera’s Young Composers Project. Young composers from the New England region have submitted short choral pieces, three of which will be chosen for performance.   • The Seraphim Singers [MA]: Inspired to Joy. We have been through many challenges in recent years, yet Joy resurfaces from consolation growing into hope. Ivo Antognini: Hope is the thing with feathers (poetry by Emily Dickinson); Hubert Parry: There is an old belief; Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: Magnificat in F; Trevor Weston: Lauda (premiere, commissioned work, poetry by Angelo Geter); works of J.S.
