Dr. King will be remembered in poems and speeches, but the focus of the program will be a spiritual sing along with the choirs. The choirs will perform works by Alice Parker, Moses Hogan and arrangements of familiar spirituals such as Deep River, Ride up in the Chariot, and Wade in the Water. A Benjamin Britten 100th Birthday Celebration featuring Rejoice in the Lamb, Hymn to St. Cecilia, Festival Te Deum, Hymn to the Virgin and selections from Five Flower Songs. Also on the program are two Part Songs that provide a rare glimpse of the earliest choral music of Britten. Schenectady-based organist Trevor Kahlbaugh will accompany all of the choral works for organ.
\ \ Special guests on the program are the South Hadley Children’s Chorus: West Choir directed by Catharine Melhorn, and the Hampshire Young People’s Chorus Concert Choir directed by K.C. Conlan. They will sing Britten’s Friday Afternoons, twelve children’s songs with piano accompaniment.
