Auburn Cemetery through Boston’s music history, starting in the late 19th century, a time when Cecilia played an important role in Boston's emergence as an American center for classical music. The walk visits the gravesite of B.J. Lang, Cecilia’s first music director, along with other historic figures, including BSO founder Henry Lee Higginson, two of the “Boston Six” - Arthur Foote and George W. Chadwick — as well as Margret Ruthven Lang, the first American woman to have a piece performed by a major orchestra, and Mabel Wheeler Daniel, a conductor, composer, and educator. This concert explores the complex history of how that prophecy came to be heeded by some and shunned by others.
