Chorus description:
The Club was founded in 1911 by college men of our area promoting "male voice singing of the highest excellence." Members have shared the stage with Broadway stars, gifted musicians and major opera talents. For a year they were even directed by the late Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops fame. Today's musical repertoire ranges from medieval works to modern popular choral pieces blended into each concert. As the University Glee club enters its tenth uninterrupted decade of concerts, it carries forward the cultural tradition of male choral music initiated by its founders in 1911. It also still carries forward its responsibility to give back to the community through musical outreach concerts and sponsorship of the recently established "Friends of the Music Mansion." Throughout the Club's history, members have given much of their time and talents to support community organizations in need. After learning that the Music Mansion- a historic haven for amateur musical performance and rehearsal in Providence- was in danger of closing its doors due to structural defects, former Club president Anthony Del Vecchio and other members joined a local group which eventually raised funding to save the site. The 'Friends of the Music Mansion' now sponsor amatuer and non-profit musical performances in teh restored building- publicschool children regularly visit to see and hear musical artists up close in a way not possible in their own classrooms. Many amateur groups use its halls for rehearsal and performance- the Glee Club itself is proud to call the Music Mansion home for its seasonal rehearsals.
