Chorus description:
In 1980, a group of Tiverton choral enthusiasts founded the chorus as an ecumenical choral group called the Tiverton Community Chorus, drawing membership from several churches in Tiverton. John Travers and Dr. Kermit Dewey, both of Tiverton, volunteered their services as Director and Accompanist. Initial financial support from the Northeastern Petroleum Company provided singers with music and folders. Following four years of able leadership by John Travers, Anne Parke of Little Compton became the second director. During her 15-year tenure, the chorus more than doubled in size, adding members from much of Newport County and nearby Massachusetts communities. The group changed its name to the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus to reflect more accurately its broader membership base. The chorus also undertook increasingly challenging musical offerings, mixing classical choral works with the lighter popular and seasonal fare. In 2003, accomplished musician Beth Armstrong of Bristol became the director. The chorus meets for two semesters each year to rehearse for our concert seasons. Our winter semester begins in September, while our spring semester begins in January. We are an non-auditioned group and welcome everyone of high school age and older who wants to sing, and we provide practice CD’s for those who cannot read music. The chorus rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the Amicable Church located at 3637 Main Road in Tiverton, RI. The first three rehearsals of each semester are open to visitors who wish to try out the chorus before making the commitment to join.
