Chorus description:
The Somerville Community Chorus is a nonprofit arts corporation, based in Somerville Massachusetts and committed to providing music and culture to the community. The organization is run by its members and an elected board of directors. The Chorus rehearses once a week for two hours each Tuesday night from September to December and from January to May. Two formal concerts are scheduled each year, one during the holiday season in December and on during the spring in May. The Chorus plays an active role in the community. In addition to our concert performances, the Chorus performs for events for the City of Somerville such as the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the City Hall Plaza and the annual bus tour of neighborhood Christmas decorations – the “Illuminations Tour”. We also give free performances in various Somerville senior living facilities. The Chorus performs a variety of music, from classical to contemporary. We’ve sung works by Bach, Brahms, Vivaldi, Hovhaness, Mozart, Dvorak, Holst, Copland, Carmichael, Gershwin, Porter, and Webber. The Chorus has performed a range of musical styles, including folk songs, spirituals, religious texts, Broadway musicals, and rock ‘n roll. We are a member-led volunteer organization. We hire a music director, an accompanist, musicians for the concerts, and pay for our concert halls. Aside from that, volunteers do everything to make it happen.
