The Lessons and Carols service was begun in the 19th Century at King’s College, Cambridge, and is now performed by choirs all over the world. Our services will feature nine texts read by members of the host venues, carols sung by the audience, and choral selections sung by Schola Nova from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten for voices and harp, featuring harpist Tara Alterman. Schola Nova eagerly revisits repertoire from our 2012-2013 season with a performance of the Sicut Cervus concert, various and complimentary settings of Psalm 42, As a Hart Longs for Flowing Streams by William Billings, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Felix Mendelssohn, and J. P Sweelinck. We will also perform Arvo Pärt's The Beatitudes. Once again, we are delighted to make this music with our friend and colleague Larry Picard, Organist and Director of Music at South Congregational Church, Springfield. The nine texts read from the books of Genesis, Isiah, Luke, Matthew, and John remain the same from year to year. Our presentation will feature these texts as read by members of the host venues. The music sung varies from year to year and church to church. This year, Schola Nova will perform choral selections by David Willcocks, John Rutter, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Matthew Culloton, John Tavener, Bob Chilcott, Peter Philips, and Eric Whitacre. We also are pleaesd to introduce Schola Brassa Nova, a brass ensemble comprised of members of Schola Nova plus a few family friends. Schola Brassa Nova will accompany the audience in the singing of favorite carols for the season.
