Featuring Robert DeCormier's powerful choral masterpiece They Called her Moses in a newly re-voiced version for women's chorus and narrator. The work depicts the life of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad through a creative narrative interwoven with spirituals which contain words known to refer to hidden messages about escape and life beyond slavery. Louise DeCormier will serve as narrator. The concert will also include the premier of a new arrangement by folk musician Pete Sutherland of "The Bailiff's Daughter," a ballad from the Helen Hartness Flanders collection. There will also be selections by American composers Aaron Copland, Irving Fine, Paul Basler, Mark Hayes and Norwegian-born composer Ola Gjeilo. Gustav Holst's ethereal Ave Maria for double women's chorus and a vibrant setting of the Gloria by renowned Canadian composer Imant Raminsh are among the featured works. Bella Voce is excited to share these performances with VSO violinist Michael Dabroski as Guest Artist, who will perform a frolicking Celtic arrangement of "I Saw Three Ships" with the choir along with solo violin selections by the world famous violinist Fritz Kreisler.
