3:00 PM. Boston Children’s Chorus / Boston City Singers / Handel and Haydn Chamber Choir [MA]: Langston Hughes and Phillis Wheatley: I Dream a World. A U.S. 250th anniversary concert sponsored by Celebrity Series of Boston. Each youth choir presents a unique musical setting of Langston Hughes’ poem “I Dream A World,” by composers Rollo Dilworth, Mike Block, Andre Thomas, Dan Welcher, and others. With the world premiere of a work by B.E. Boykin setting text by Phillis Wheatley, and an arrangement for two cellos of Wheatley’s “A Farewell to America.” Mike Block and Francesca McNeeley, cello. An ensemble of more than 30 singers, dancers, and instrumentalists representing Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Mali, and others, engage in a dialogue that honors the more than 25 million people from across the sea enslaved by European colonial powers over more than four centuries, celebrating their heritage with readings, traditional music from many countries, and works by Gaspar Fernandes and others.
