Please join us for a concert of varied works about love with special guests Bozena O’Brien, violin, Sherry Stromski, piano, and the Portsmouth High School Madrigal Singers, Olin Johanessen, director. We begin with three selections from Brahms’s masterful opus 93a, Sechs Lieder und Romanzen (Six Songs and Romances): "Das Mädchen" (the maiden), "O süsser Mai" (O Sweet May) and "Der Falke" (The Falcon), followed by two solo art songs: Brahms’s "Von ewiger Liebe" (Of Eternal Love), sung by mezzo-soprano Susan Williams, and Fauré’s "Au bord de l’eau" (At the Water’s Edge), sung by soprano Morgen Ames. A wonderful showcase for the solo violin, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs is a poignant group of choral settings of Hebrew poetry by the composer’s girlfriend (now wife), Hila Pittman. The second half of the program includes a selection of arrangements of traditional songs and newly-composed pieces by contemporary composers, including Matthew Harris, John Gardener, René Clausen, and John Rutter. The Portsmouth High School Madrigal Singers will join Amare Cantare in singing a group of Scottish songs, including the well-loved "Annie Laurie" and "Loch Lomond," and Clausen’s setting of the famous Robert Burns poem "O My Luve’s Like a Red, Red Rose." The Madrigals Singers will also sing a set by themselves including works by Stephen Chatman, Eliza Gilkyson, and Andrea Ramsey. The program ends with Amare Cantare and The Madrigals Singers joining together to perform Robert Page’s arrangement of "No One Has Ever Loved Me" from the musical Passion by Stephen Sondheim. The centerpieces of the program will be Magnificat by Antonio Vivaldi and Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël, a charming and popular mass based on French carols. Both works will be accompanied by an 8-person chamber orchestra of strings, flutes and continuo. The concert also showcases two works by Isabella Leonarda, a 17th-century Italian Ursuline nun who composed over 200 works. We will perform her motet Alma redemptoris Mater, and Sonata Duodecima, opus 16, for solo violin and continuo, one of her most accomplished and best known compositions. General admission is $15 at the door $12 in advance, Students and Seniors are $12 at the door and $10 in advance.
