Please join us for a concert of varied works about love with special guests Bozena O’Brien, violin, Sherry Stromski, piano, and the Portsmouth High School Madrigal Singers, Olin Johanessen, director. We begin with three selections from Brahms’s masterful opus 93a, Sechs Lieder und Romanzen (Six Songs and Romances): "Das Mädchen" (the maiden), "O süsser Mai" (O Sweet May) and "Der Falke" (The Falcon), followed by two solo art songs: Brahms’s "Von ewiger Liebe" (Of Eternal Love), sung by mezzo-soprano Susan Williams, and Fauré’s "Au bord de l’eau" (At the Water’s Edge), sung by soprano Morgen Ames. A wonderful showcase for the solo violin, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs is a poignant group of choral settings of Hebrew poetry by the composer’s girlfriend (now wife), Hila Pittman. The second half of the program includes a selection of arrangements of traditional songs and newly-composed pieces by contemporary composers, including Matthew Harris, John Gardener, René Clausen, and John Rutter. Please join us for a concert of varied works about love with special guests Bozena O’Brien, violin, Sherry Stromski, piano, and the Portsmouth High School Madrigal Singers, Olin Johanessen, director. We begin with three selections from Brahms’s masterful opus 93a, Sechs Lieder und Romanzen (Six Songs and Romances): "Das Mädchen" (the maiden), "O süsser Mai" (O Sweet May) and "Der Falke" (The Falcon), followed by two solo art songs: Brahms’s "Von ewiger Liebe" (Of Eternal Love), sung by mezzo-soprano Susan Williams, and Fauré’s "Au bord de l’eau" (At the Water’s Edge), sung by soprano Morgen Ames. A wonderful showcase for the solo violin, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs is a poignant group of choral settings of Hebrew poetry by the composer’s girlfriend (now wife), Hila Pittman. The second half of the program includes a selection of arrangements of traditional songs and newly-composed pieces by contemporary composers, including Matthew Harris, John Gardener, René Clausen, and John Rutter.
