The first of six online workshops for singers interested in building vocal and musicianship skills: an introduction to fundamental concepts of music, including elements of pitch and rhythm, intervals, construction of the scale, key signatures, musical form, and basic analytical and interpretive techniques, led by Providence Singers assistant director John Black. Many of his students have been accepted into major music schools such as The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, and Westminster Choir College. In this workshop, Paulo will guide singers in a series of enjoyable online vocal exercises to heighten each singer’s awareness of optimal vocal production for ensemble singing. iCal 7:00 PM. Providence Singers [RI]: Sight-Singing and Ear Training Workshop, Part 1. Using the Moveable Do system, Providence Singers Artistic Director Dr. Christine Noel will lead participants through sequential sight-singing exercises, beginning in stepwise motion and gradually moving to more complex material. Separate ear training techniques will be introduced to enable singers to identify various pitches in a given tonality. We’ll explore and drill rhythms of intermediate and advanced difficulty. Singers will not be expected to sing alone, and participants of all levels are welcome. All materials will be provided, including Bach chorales, which will form the basis of our study. A workshop about how the Alexander Technique can improve performance, increase your comfort and joy in singing, and give you real tools to combat the aches, pains and discomforts of life as a human. Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of the most sought-after composers working today, with a busy commission schedule and performances of his music heard on every continent. He is also a popular public speaker and has been featured on TED talks. In this one-hour talk, he will discuss his works, including "The Time Has Come," a setting of excerpts from Nelson Mandela's inaugural address. iCal 1:00 PM. Providence Singers [online]: Online talk by composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. Composer Ēriks Ešenvald will be joining us from his native Latvia to discuss his work and answer questions. Registered participants will also receive a link to the recorded premiere performance of his "Northern Lights" multimedia symphony, as well as a documentary entitled "Nordic Light: A Composer's Diary" that follows the process of creating this symphony, including three expeditions to Alaska, Iceland, Greenland, and Scandinavia to collect folksongs and legends about aurora. Zoom credentials will be emailed to registered quests on Saturday, April 24.
