Description

Masterworks Chorale is one of the leading choruses in the Boston area and an active part of the region’s musical community. Masterworks draws its committed singers, professional orchestra and talented soloists from throughout New England. The Chorale performs a three-concert series at Sanders Theatre, offers popular community “Sings” at the holidays and in the summer, and provides intergenerational outreach opportunities.

Founded as the Lexington Choral Society, the chorus was led by three conductors through its first dozen years: George Faulkner, Wilmer Bartholomew, and George W. Grant. In 1947, composer Lukas Foss guest conducted the ensemble in the Boston premiere of his American oratorio, The Prairie. Allen Lannom became the chorus’ conductor in 1952 and continued for 53 years, a tenure unmatched by any music organization. Under his leadership, the ensemble experienced significant artistic growth and achievement. In 1969, the organization changed its name to Masterworks Chorale to better reflect the geographic diversity of its membership and its contribution to the cultural life of greater Boston.
